What is Christianity?

Christianity is simply a religion focused on a single God, revealed to humanity in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Our God is the source of the created order, especially all life in its many forms.

Human persons have a unique place in the world. While all God’s creative work reveals the nature of God, humanity is made explicitly in God’s image…men and women. As a result, there is a potent relationship between our God and the human race.

But humanity is deeply flawed. We often reveal the nature of our corrupted world rather than our perfect and loving God. Hence, we are “sinful” – a term that means we are less than we were created to be in God’s ecology.

As a result of humanity’s sinfulness, we needed something to restore us to our intended place in the universe. God the Father, therefore, sent God the Son to Earth…and in a mighty miracle known as the incarnation (which means to become flesh), the Son became both human and Divine. Under the power of God the Spirit, Jesus came and lived a human life without sin and was executed tyrannically as a sacrifice for humanity’s sinfulness. And to punctuate this supreme act of love, Jesus was raised from the dead and lives to this day.

In the illustration above, the problem of sinfulness is clearly shown. There is a huge space between humanity and God. The bridge between the two is the cross; the life and sacrifice of Jesus restores us to our rightful place as God’s children.
